The Militant Altruist is a series of reflection pieces. I believe the journey of being a better person starts with self-reflection.

A Brief History

I remember telling my mother that I wanted to pursue a degree in Marketing; she replied, “that is the business of sharks, if you walk that path, you will become one too.” I was also warned that when I went away to college no one would believe in god, they would be having sex in the hallways and forcing crack up my nose if I walked by. Neither scenario played out.

After all, perhaps there is some truth to my mother’s warning about Marketing. After spending a decade as a market researcher, many of the agencies and organizations I have encountered are made up of cold-hearted, manipulative, Don Draper types. Although I often tire of the company, studying humans never ceases to inspire me. Together we form an intricate human tapestry and I am drawn by the the mechanics its weave, the detail of its pattern, the sacredness of its stories and the stray threads asking to be pulled. Increasing our collective self-awareness makes us all more dynamic, tolerant individuals. My philosophy is human first. In work. In life. In politics.

We are all on a journey of betterment. Life is a game of constant improvement (and frequent pitfalls) and a fierce and ongoing battle against entropy.

Here, I will use this space to reflect on my own journey to be a better human (and human representative). I hope you read it as an inspiration, but also as a challenge.
